This weekend we were back up in St. Joe for Dr. appts. (and just as an excuse to see family again). I took Friday off and joined Nick for his two morning classes before we drove up to St. Joe. We made record time getting there- 2 hours 40 minutes. It was a nice drive. We're both used to driving late at night up north (always leaving after we got off work) so it's dark out. It was nice getting to look around during broad daylight on the drive up. We made it a bit early so Nick offered to pick up McKenzie from school and I went to by OBGYN appt. We both later met up to have chiropractic appts. Both of us were in a lot of pain afterwards, because we had to be pretty heavily adjusted. Luckily, I had a massage appt. right afterwards, which was AWESOME! I think every woman should have a massage at least once in her life. I felt like absolute Jell-O afterwards. It was great.
Later that evening I went grocery shopping. Mom's had a rough end to her season as president of the home-school association so I thought it would be fitting to throw her a retirement party. The family favorites were in order- chicken continental, mash potatoes, green beans, and chocolate mayo cake. I found some cute napkins and color-coordinating decorations to "jazz" up the kitchen while at the store. Finding a card proved to be a challenge... all of the retirement cards seemed to allude to golfing or old age, but the congratulations cards seemed to refer to promotions or awards. I finally found, of all things, a Dr. Suess card that was perfect, based off the book "Oh, the Places You'll Go". On Sunday morning the family headed out to second service. Nick and I waited to leave until third so we could decorate the kitchen while they were gone. I think Mom enjoyed it.
On Saturday Nick went with my Dad and Michael to the synagogue in KC. Nick and I had attended an Orthodox Jewish service a month ago for one of his classes, so he was already a bit familiar with some of the customs, but got a lot more out of the Messainic service he attended. While he was with the guys, I went with my mom to the KCI Expo Center for the MPE Home Educator's Conference. I used to go to the home-school conference in jr. high and high school to choose which curriculum I'd want. It's always been one of those "just me and mom" things that I looked forward to doing every year. Now that I'm graduated, but don't have any kids of my own, there's really no need for me to go but I still wanted to go for the sake of old memories and hanging out with Mom and we both had fun. We bumped into several people from the St. Joe home school group and a couple from our church that are going to home-school. We both sat in for two classes led by Greg and Sono Harris. The classes had more to do with Christian character than home-schooling and I really enjoyed them. Nick and I have both talked about possibly home-schooling our kids at least for the early years. There have been so many great updates to the curriculum that I used to use as a kid, that I want to start home-schooling now! I might have to start recruiting kids off our block...
Later on Saturday evening, Nick & I joined up and took my Grandma Morehead out for dinner at Chipotle (or rather, she took us out). I had never been there before. We all split meals because the portions were huge. When we came back home, Michael and Alex joined us and we played Upwards and Phase 10.
On Sunday, after church and our big celebration dinner, Dad and I went on a walk on Lover's Lane. It was just absolutely beautiful out. When we came back, we packed up our things and had to be back on the road again. Today, Nick has "skip day" at school, so he's cleaning house and preparing for our small group (we'll be having it at our home). Nick will be leading a worship service all evening long. I know he wants to incorporate an abbreviated Sader service, but other than that, I'll be in for a surprise as much as everyone else in the group.
Hope all is well with you guys. Feel free to let us know what's going on in your kneck of the woods.
